The
principle of measurement of fabric thickness is based on
“the
precise measurement of the distance between two plane parallel plates separated
by the cloth when a known pressure is applied and maintained on the plates.”
To measure the
fabric thickness
·
We
first clean the foot and anvil.
·
Then
we set the guage to zero.
·
After
that the weights are added to the presser foot.
·
The
fabric is prepared by ironing and making sure it does not have any creases.
·
Then
the fabric is placed on the anvil.
·
Then
the presser foot is brought down until the guage reading is steady.
·
We
take at least 10 different readings at 10 different parts of the fabric.
·
The
mean value is the thickness of the fabric
Some Parameters
of the Fabric Thickness measurer are stated below
Shape and size
of the presser foot:
circular foot diameter 3/8 inch ( the ratio of foot diameter to the cloth
should be less than 5:1).
Shape and size
of the anvil:
the diameter of anvil has to be 2 inch larger than presser foot.
Pressure: 0.1 lbs/inch2
to 10 lbs/inch2
Velocity of presser
foot: 2/1000
inch per sec
Time: the reading should
be taken when the dial is steady after lowering the presser foot.
